What is SEER?
SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) measures how much cooling a unit produces per unit of electricity consumed over an entire season. Higher SEER = same cooling at less electricity.

In a mild climate, the difference between a 14 SEER and 20 SEER system is meaningful but modest. In Palm Springs, where cooling season is essentially year-round, that efficiency gap multiplies across thousands more operating hours annually.

Monthly during summer — no exceptions. Desert dust is significantly finer and more abundant than in other climates, and it clogs filters faster than most filter manufacturers assume when they print their "change every 3 months" guidance. A clogged filter restricts airflow, reduces efficiency, causes the coil to ice over, and forces the system to work harder on every cycle. This single habit affects system life more than almost any other maintenance action.
Several possible causes: low refrigerant (the system can't move heat effectively), dirty evaporator or condenser coils (reduced heat transfer), a failing compressor, undersized equipment for the actual load, leaky ducts delivering less airflow than the system produces, or inadequate insulation allowing heat to enter faster than the system removes it. This is a diagnostic job — we identify the actual cause before recommending a repair, upgrade, or replacement.
A mini-split (ductless system) pairs an outdoor compressor with one or more wall-mounted indoor air handlers — no ductwork required. They make the most sense for: additions or converted spaces without existing ducts, garages, guest quarters, or rooms that your central system cannot cool adequately. They are also highly efficient and allow zone-level control — you only cool the rooms that are occupied. Installing a mini-split in a problematic room is often faster and more targeted than re-engineering the main duct system.
Common signs: some rooms are consistently harder to cool than others despite similar size and exposure; you feel weak airflow from certain vents; your utility bills are higher than neighbors with similar-sized homes; or your attic is extremely hot even on moderate days (conditioned air leaking into the attic shows up as unusual heat there). A duct pressure test confirms leakage quantitatively and identifies where the losses are occurring so we address the right locations.
A useful rule: if the system is under 10 years old and the repair is a single, clearly identified component failure, repair usually makes sense. If the system is 12–15+ years old, is experiencing multiple failures, is a low-efficiency unit, or the repair cost approaches half the replacement cost — replacement is typically the better financial decision over a 5-year horizon. Yes — significantly. HVAC sizing uses Manual J load calculations that account for outdoor design temperatures, solar gain, insulation levels, window area, and building orientation. The Coachella Valley's extreme summer design temperatures require careful calculation because the outdoor-to-indoor temperature differential is much larger than most residential systems are commonly designed for. A system sized for a Los Angeles home would be undersized for the same square footage in Palm Springs. We always calculate before specifying equipment.
Before peak summer: replace the air filter, clear any debris or vegetation from around the outdoor condenser (needs 2 feet of clearance minimum), visually check that the condenser coil fins are clean and straight, confirm the condensate drain line is clear (a clogged drain will shut the system off or cause water damage), and schedule a professional tune-up to check refrigerant charge, electrical connections, and coil condition. Doing this in April instead of waiting until your A/C struggles on the first 110°F day saves you from being on a waiting list for service in peak demand.
