TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin) is a single-ply membrane applied to flat and low-slope roofs. It is heat-welded at the seams, which creates a waterproof bond stronger than adhesive-based systems. It is also naturally white or light-colored, which makes it reflective — ideal for a desert climate. It is currently the most widely used commercial and residential flat roofing material in the US, and it performs well in the UV-heavy environment of the Coachella Valley.
In the Coachella Valley, roofs experience extreme UV exposure and severe thermal cycling — surfaces heat to 170°F in the afternoon and cool significantly at night. This daily expansion and contraction stresses materials, causes adhesives to fail, dries out flashings, and cracks tiles faster than in moderate climates. Products rated for hot climates matter. Warranties assuming "average" conditions may not accurately reflect real-world service life here.
Yes — ponding water (standing more than 48 hours after rain) is a problem even in a low-rainfall desert. Water weight stresses the structure, algae and debris accumulate, and standing water accelerates membrane degradation. The fix is usually a tapered insulation system or a drain relocation — not just patching the surface. We assess the drainage pattern and recommend the right solution, not just a temporary fix.
It depends on the membrane type. TPO and modified bitumen can handle careful foot traffic. Foam roofing (SPF) is more vulnerable to puncture and should only be walked on with soft-soled shoes and care. Gravel-ballasted roofs need the gravel kept in place. If you're not sure, don't — one accidental puncture can negate the value of whatever you went up to look at. We inspect professionally and document with photos.
Flashing is the metal or membrane material used at transitions — where the roof meets a wall, chimney, vent, or skylight. It is the most common source of roof leaks because it is the most vulnerable to thermal movement, caulk cracking, and improper installation. In the desert, metal flashing expands and contracts significantly with temperature swings, which works existing caulk loose over time. Flashing inspection and re-sealing is part of every project we do.

A restoration is a full-surface treatment: cleaning, addressing all minor defects, and applying a new protective coating over the existing membrane to extend its life without full tear-off. Restoration is a good option when the membrane structure is still sound but the surface has aged. We recommend it when the underlying system has years of life left and full replacement would be premature.
