What is low-E glass and do I actually need it in the desert?

Low-E (low emissivity) glass has an invisible metallic coating that reflects infrared heat. Without it, clear glass acts like a magnifying lens on your interior. It is not a luxury — in this climate, it is the standard we recommend for every replacement.

Can new windows reduce noise from outside?

Yes — dual-pane windows significantly reduce sound transmission compared to single-pane. The air (or gas) gap between the panes acts as a buffer. Do I need a permit for window replacement?

It depends on the scope. Like-for-like replacement (same size, same opening) typically does not require a permit in most Coachella Valley jurisdictions. What frame material holds up best in desert heat?

Vinyl and fiberglass frames outperform aluminum in hot climates. Aluminum conducts heat readily — it gets burning hot to the touch and transfers that heat inward. Vinyl is affordable and performs well. Fiberglass is stronger, dimensionally stable (doesn't expand and contract as much with temperature swings), and has the longest lifespan. What is the difference between a full-frame replacement and a retrofit insert?

A retrofit (or pocket) insert fits the new window into the existing frame — faster and less disruptive, but you lose a little glass area and cannot fix any rot or water damage in the existing frame. A full-frame replacement removes everything including the frame, allows inspection and repair of the surrounding structure, and provides a completely fresh installation. For older homes or any sign of moisture damage, full-frame is the right call.

How do I know if my windows are actually causing energy problems?

Common signs: you can feel warmth radiating off the glass when standing a foot away, rooms near large windows feel dramatically hotter, you see condensation forming between panes (seal failure), or you notice your A/C running almost constantly even when the thermostat is set low. How long do replacement windows last?

Quality vinyl windows typically last 20–25 years. Fiberglass can last 30–40 years or more. The seal between dual panes is usually warranted for 10–20 years against failure.
